This walkthrough installs OBS on Windows or Ubuntu and sends a USB camera feed over NDI. OBS is free recording and live-streaming software, available for Windows and Ubuntu from its official website. To add NDI support, install an NDI plugin. NDI is a technology for sending and receiving video and audio streams over a network; the plugin lets OBS send and receive those streams. **About OBS:** OBS, or Open Broadcaster Software, is free, open-source video recording and live-streaming software. It is widely used by developers, streamers, and video creators, and is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. **About NDI:** NDI, or Network Device Interface, is a video-streaming technology developed by NewTek. It allows high-quality video to be sent and received over an IP network with low latency. It is widely used in broadcasting, live-event production, video conferencing, and live streaming. ## What NDI looks like after installing the plugin ![](/blog-assets/media/49c9a6c6fad1090c7a06ac5be31b9a31712eb19bd6564a3983488c57d8fe1962/2024-02-23-17-59-38-884-scaled.webp) Select the USB camera. ![](/blog-assets/media/7831743219c3f5091315e88a8465a64446827ea5c3e61aa53ba149ee7f700120/2024-02-23-17-59-51-903-scaled.webp) Select NDI Output. ![](/blog-assets/media/c104ab3ffba61298ac1f5b92ed37589f9afca7cffbff4ef367f630c754eef49a/2024-02-23-18-00-01-592-scaled.webp) Enable Main Output. ![](/blog-assets/media/d1e470587adb4527b95bce18733a63a54e6ba6a423f1d12de01709c4147e6d12/2024-02-23-18-00-14-756-scaled.webp) The video is now being transmitted over NDI. You can customize the installation, but beginners can keep the default options. ![](/blog-assets/media/4331d38c7c3357eea62801d7dedfc881e59aecf2dd502780406352bf0b7b7807/2024-02-23-17-19-43-273-scaled.webp) You can cancel the initial configuration wizard for this example. ![](/blog-assets/media/38c619b2b56ea2beb4698464da24647105d7068d219ac4dc65b7014acd00d143/2024-02-23-17-20-24-603-scaled.webp) Add the OBS-NDI plugin to give OBS the ability to transmit USB camera video over NDI. In this example it was obs-ndi-4.13.0-windows-x64-Installer.exe. Run the EXE. ![](/blog-assets/media/4682cc3b5404443b6fd55b7419a76ff3323082e7993ac7d3eb112dc497162cb5/2024-02-23-17-21-40-622-scaled.webp) NDI is available when OBS starts. Use Tools > NDI Output to send a stream. The NDI SDK/runtime was installed automatically in this setup, which made it easy. ![](/blog-assets/media/9f7c700bc4cc0e8577057e750447fe7a371eb53591f0cec6a5682f3c37dba759/2024-02-23-17-23-21-419-scaled.webp) To receive a feed, add an NDI Source. ![](/blog-assets/media/04193f52779a523d61cc365ac29b29316191eaad1b8556feff5c981c6d7cfd2e/2024-02-23-17-23-31-637-scaled.webp) That completes the Windows setup. Next is Ubuntu. ## Ubuntu 22.04: install OBS and send the USB camera feed over NDI The hardware I used for Ubuntu 22.04 was a CHUWI LarkBox X with an AMD Ryzen 3750U.

Register through the NDI site to receive the download for Install_NDI_SDK_v5_Linux.tar.gz by email. Download the Linux version of the NDI SDK. Names and download procedures may differ with the version. [https://ndi.video/download-ndi-sdk/](https://ndi.video/download-ndi-sdk/) Extract the downloaded SDK archive, adjusting the filename as appropriate. ``` tar -xzvf Install_NDI_SDK_v5_Linux.tar.gz ``` Run the NDI SDK installer script. Press Enter through the text until item 10, then press Y to agree. **After item 10, press Enter one step at a time so you do not skip the agreement prompt.** ![](/blog-assets/media/61cefc2f0e7eaf90a82697911e1da6e98d6c89e73b4e8fd2c59083b2f7666c04/2024-02-23-10-45-52-913.webp) ``` sudo ./Install_NDI_SDK_v5_Linux.sh ``` Enter the SDK installation directory. Names may differ slightly with the version, so check with ls. The target is the x86_64-linux-gnu directory inside lib. ``` cd 'NDI SDK for Linux' cd lib cd x86_64-linux-gnu ``` Copy the NDI libraries to the system library directory. Update the library cache. Placing the libraries there avoids needing to change environment variables. The x86_64-linux-gnu directory should contain about three files, including libndi.so.5.6.0. Move all of them. Moving only libndi.so.5.6.0 might also be sufficient. ![](/blog-assets/media/af20ac47f4a676199fa89c10d5c7b11cd593b37e02d72ad3b99cab5a06f21a33/2024-02-23-10-46-40-598.webp) ``` sudo cp libndi.so* /usr/local/lib/ sudo ldconfig ``` You may see a message such as "/sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/local/lib/libndi.so.5 is not a symbolic link." Check that libndi.so.5 is a regular file, then remove it. ``` sudo rm /usr/local/lib/libndi.so.5 ``` Create the correct symbolic link to libndi.so.5.6.0 and run ldconfig again to update the cache. The warning should disappear. ``` sudo ln -s libndi.so.5.6.0 /usr/local/lib/libndi.so.5 sudo ldconfig ``` Next, install OBS on Ubuntu. ``` sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio sudo apt update sudo apt install obs-studio ``` Install the OBS-NDI plugin. On Ubuntu, use the x86_64-linux-gnu.deb package. Using OBS is the same as on Windows. ![](/blog-assets/media/6cc215e6a36c45dd95e01d8a0ccbeffd108469cdc690acb83c4851812162ebb2/DSC08563-scaled.webp) ## Another option: NDI Tools alone can send a USB camera feed NDI Tools is a collection of convenient tools for Windows, also available free. Many features are Windows-only. It can be confusing at first, but is simple once you know where to look. [https://ndi.video/tools/](https://ndi.video/tools/) After installing it, try sending the USB camera through NDI Tools. You might expect to start with Webcam, but camera transmission actually comes from Screen Capture, which surprised me. ![](/blog-assets/media/aa6d1f306997944e70db46f8548cba4e94dadce4e7367732d798da262ad5d458/2024-02-23-18-01-34-299-scaled.webp) Clicking Screen Capture does not open a window. Instead, it appears among the hidden system-tray icons at the bottom right of Windows. Another surprise! ![](/blog-assets/media/7960a532ef438b5ab43d26e7f1db6422f2d39fa5e40338b7345f70b1ebd8ce13/2024-02-23-18-02-10-118-scaled.webp) Right-click that icon to open its menu. In the webcam section, select the camera and resolution. ![](/blog-assets/media/65f9a5064d9327f8a4e5bcbea72ce7c59584ac9363e5f3dfa742c85a7550d3cf/2024-02-23-18-02-35-870-scaled.webp) That is it: the USB camera video is sent over NDI. ![](/blog-assets/media/6acfc55760733c4fb3b9be17719970e16638fe51d469fbf5c6f809ab22e89413/2024-02-23-18-03-26-249-scaled.webp) NDI lets you receive feeds from multiple network-connected cameras and switch between them in OBS for live streaming. Easy network transmission of high-quality video makes it useful in many situations.
